This portrait of my mother's family was taken in the late 1800s. The christian names of her two sisters prompted my uncle to make enquiries at Somerset House, as to their relationship to Florence Nightingale. It emerged that she was a half sister of my mother's (Esther) great grandmother. When the teacher Mr Bell posed the question "Who was Florence Nightingale", as a nine year old boy, the first thing which sprung to mind, was her relationship to me, rather than her historical significance.
